Berocca Energy is iconic with a strong heritage in pharmacy, but there’s a lot more to it than a hangover treatment or as a pick-me-up, as it’s the worlds most clinically tested energy multivitamin and is clinically proven to support physical energy and stamina.1-10
If you believe Berocca Energy is only for when you’ve been burning the candle at both ends or when you have a big day or event coming up—think again! Berocca Energy is actually recommended for daily use6 thanks to its proven effects on energy and cognitive performance supported by clinical evidence from numerous clinical studies conducted over the past 20 years. It’s no wonder that this iconic brand has been loved and trusted for more than 55 years and is now sold in more than 70 countries.10
Berocca Energy built on trust
Since its launch more than 55 years ago, Berocca Energy’s proven effects on energy and performance have made it a stand-out on pharmacy shelves. First developed in Switzerland in 1969 as a ‘neutrotropic vitamin for nerves’ and sold on prescription, Berocca Energy was formulated with vitamin B complex, vitamin C and minerals.
However, to meet the evolving and changing needs of time-poor and health-conscious consumers, Berocca Energy has been reformulated and upgraded over the years with the addition of calcium, magnesium and later zinc. It also became available in new formats like Berocca Twist N Go.
Berocca continues to support the daily and ongoing energy needs of all Australians. Palatable and portable, Berocca offers pharmacists and their customers the best of both worlds—a multivitamin energy drink—and a delicious way to stay hydrated for all activities and energy needs—whatever the day brings.
The science behind Berocca Energy
Berocca Energy is a brand you and your customers already know1 and trust, but many are unaware that Berocca Energy is actually the world’s most clinically tested energy multivitamin.10
Over the past 20 years, seven clinical studies2-9 have proven the benefits of taking Berocca Energy.
For example, a placebo-controlled clinical study of 80 healthy participants6 using Berocca Energy demonstrated “significant” improvements in psychological wellbeing with participants experiencing less anxiety and mild stress and better concentration. Berocca Energy also helped support the immune system.
“Berocca was associated with consistent and statistically significant reductions in anxiety and perceived stress. Participants in the Berocca group also tended to rate themselves as less tired and better able to concentrate.”6
In another larger placebo-controlled trial, participants using Berocca Energy for 33 days experienced significantly improved ratings of mild stress, healthy mood balance and cognitive performance.2
“Supplementation led to improved ratings of stress, mental health and vigour and improved cognitive performance during intense mental processing.
“…Healthy members of the general population may benefit from augmented levels of vitamins/minerals via direct dietary supplementation.”
This evidence was further confirmed in another study. Kennedy et al found that taking Berocca Energy for 28 days increased alertness and significantly increased concentration, mental and physical stamina compared with placebo.4
“Participants in the vitamin/mineral group (Berocca) rated themselves as having greater physical stamina across assessments and weeks. They rated themselves as having/had greater concentration and mental stamina during the working day … and also reported greater subjective alertness.”
Additionally, other research shows the benefits of Berocca on task-related brain activities after just one dose.5,7 In one study, and the first of its kind, participants consumed Berocca Performance or Berocca Boost, and then underwent a neurocognitive assessment. Mood ratings were taken before and immediately after the assessment and some volunteers underwent post-treatment functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning during rapid visual information processing (RVP) and inspection time activation tasks.
The fMRI revealed that both multivitamin treatments increased activation in areas associated with working memory and attentional processing, with the effect being greater in the multivitamin with guaraná condition. The results demonstrated the acute benefits of multivitamins with guaraná on mood and cognitive performance. Importantly, they demonstrated, for the first time, increased brain activation from multivitamin preparations both with and without guaraná, measured using fMRI. The researchers concluded that multivitamins actively improve neurocognitive processing.
“Our findings suggest that both Berocca Boost and Berocca Performance modify the functional activation of a key brain region underlying high-order cognitive functions.”5
Another study investigating the cognitive effects of a single dose of Berocca found it had an impact on “functional brain activity task-related brain regions”.7
Likewise, two more studies were able to show that Berocca improved task-related brain activity over a four-week course, as well as significantly improving a healthy mood balance.8,9
“Daily ingestion of a high dose B vitamin micronutrient supplement Berocca over four weeks may increase task-related functional brain activity in healthy adults.”9
As trusted healthcare professionals, pharmacists can confidently recommend Berocca Energy or try it themselves, safe in the knowledge it is efficacious and backed by science.
